Why Are My Blog Comments Getting Spammed?

You put a lot of time and effort into the blog posts you create. You want to create something you feel will be useful to your readers, and it’s exciting to get a comment. It allows you to engage with your audience. However, when you find out that it’s yet another spam comment, it can be quite disheartening. Not only do these spam comments look bad for your site, but they could also cause your ranking to drop.

Google is starting to penalize sites that allow spam comments to come through, particularly when they have links in them. If your blog is getting these types of comments, you aren’t alone. It is happening more often today.

What Do the Spam Comments Look Like?

It’s usually easy to tell when you get a spam comment. The comment may not say anything specific about the blog post. It may contain a link that looks suspicious and a username that’s little more than some keywords jammed together or random letters and numbers.

Why Do Spammers Do This?

They leave spam comments on your blog because they are trying to get more traffic to their own website. A lot of times, those links will lead back to the spammer’s website. They use this technique to try to rank higher in the search engines.

Keep in mind that most of the time, the spammers aren’t specifically targeting you or your site. They buy these spam comments, which are then sent out automatically to sites around the web that use similar keywords to the ones they have on their site.

What Can You Do About It?

You have a few different options available. First, you could simply not allow comments on your blog. You could instead have all of the discourse moved to your social media accounts. Of course, this won’t work for everyone. Some people still like the interaction they can have with their audience through the blog.

It’s also possible to moderate the blog manually. This required reviewing all of the comments before they get posted. If you have a small site, this might be possible. However, a site that has a lot of people leaving comments will find this to be overwhelming.

Another option is to use a plugin that can moderate comments on your site. These plugins tend to be good enough to recognize spam comments and can filter them, so they don’t get through. Find a solution that will work well for you and your blog.
